Temperament Testing Services

Temperament testing is done to identify any areas of concern a new or existing pet may exhibit. We highly recommend a dog be temperament tested prior to becoming part of your family. Shelter dogs oftentimes endure significant physical and emotional situations which result in long term problems. These problems don't always appear until after the dog has been removed from the shelter and is living in a new home. Most of the issues we see from shelter dogs are easily correctable with proper training, but it is imperative to identify the issues before you decide which dog is right for your family.

We provide a 24 or 48 hour temperament test at our facility. This gives us an opportunity to evaluate the dog in a variety of situations with many different dogs, in addition to assessing how your dog will behave within a home setting (including cat interest). We will observe how the dog interacts within the pack and we will evaluate for:
  • Proper Social Behaviors
  • Aggression - Dogs (testing with different age, breed, size, temperament and cat)
  • Aggression - Fear (testing with dogs and people)
  • Aggression - Food/Treat (testing with dogs and people)
  • Aggression - People (testing with gender, strangers)
  • Barking - Visitors, street activity, noises
  • Crate - Comfort with crate, entering/exiting, guarding
  • House Training - Capacity to learn
  • Handling - (touching sensitive spots, pulling, pinching - kid friendly test)
  • Leash Manners - (aggression, pulling)
  • Obedience - Capacity to learn: sit, stay, come, wait, etc.

Additional testing for specific needs will be on a per case basis.

Following the temperament test, we will provide a written evaluation of the dog as well as a training plan for any problems noted.

$100 for a 24 Hour Temperament Test
